20 Beautifully Designed iPhone Apps I Love to Use
by Damian Madray on June 24th, 2011 in Design, mobile
The first thing to start off in saying is that these Apps are not perfect and given that design is subjective, you may or may not agree. Most of these apps I’ve used while some I barely did so their usability has not been put to the test.
However, when I fired up these apps for the very first time, thoughts like “wow, sweet, fucking awesome or that’s just plain cool” is what comes to mind. That there my friends is the definition of a beautiful app.
Let’s kick it off…
Of all the billions of companies in the deal space, Living Social in my opinion will out last all of them because of better branding. With their App, they employ good design with elegance.
This app by Path made my top 20 simply because it does a really cool trick in the nav bar using transparency allowing the coloured grid to show over photos.
I need not say anything here other than point out that I think Facebook has set the standard in what social app should be like. They’ve managed to leverage the iPhone to create a unique experience on this platform that is beyond what the website could offer. I’m excited to see their iPad app.
Man, first time I opened this app, I thought that they’ve broken so many of Apple’s rules to accomplish that custom UI they have there. For that they make the cut and yes, it’s beautiful of course.
Their website rocks. Their iPhone is no different. It sports a unique navigation that I’ve yet to see in any other app. Originality is sexy and inspiring.
They took forever to launch their app for obvious reasons: making it as slick as the possibly can. I wanted to use Vimeo for my trip in SF but it was a little buggy. Nevertheless, lovely design.
Among the list of Apps I have on my phone solely because the design is slick. That says a lot.
If you read on the iPhone, use Reeder. It’s elegant. Not simple, just down right elegant.
Rightfully named, it offers an improved experience to Apple’s camera. Waiting for the showdown with iOS 5.
When I first fired this up I was blown away by Fast Society rocking a unique colour scheme with that purple.
If I had to rank this list in order, Air BnB belongs at the top. Hands down one of the slickest Apps in my arsenal that I look for an excuse to use.
Yes I did. Knock Color all you like, it’s beautiful. Color is the equivalent to a beautiful girl who’s stupid but you still can’t say she’s ugly right? Right.
Oh man… Ben. This app seriously makes me think of it as a person. They’ve managed to use exceptional branding with Ben. More importantly, using Ben is an experience.
Nike Run is just an exceptionally well designed App. Take notice on that high energy red. On a psychological level, the usage of that colour is brilliant.
Nike Training Center is impressive. Apart fo the slick, clean UI that gives way to content, the videos are, to be subjective, awesome.
There’s nothing to say here. Just download it.
Acceptably over designed.
In iOS 5, we can look forward to Reminders by Apple. Need I say more?
So what’s your app of choice for good design? I’d love to know. Really.
